The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Khufu) is the oldest and largest of the pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex adjacent to the present-day city of Giza in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one that has remained largely intact. Egyptologists have concluded that the pyramid was built as a tomb for the Egyptian pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty Khufu and estimate that it was built in the 26th century BC over a period of about 27 years.
Initially standing at 146.5 meters 481 feet , the Great Pyramid has been the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years. Throughout history, the majority of the soft white limestone casing has been removed, lowering the height of the pyramid to the present-day 138.5 meters (454.4 ft). What we see today is the basic basic structure. The Great Pyramid was built by excavating an estimated 2.3 million large blocks weighing 6 million tons. The majority of stones are heterogeneous in size or shape and are only roughly covered. The local limestone was used mainly from the Giza plateau. Other blocks were imported by boat across the Nile: white limestone from Tura for the casing, and granite blocks from Aswan weighing up to 80 tons for the structure of the King’s Chamber
There are three known chambers within the Great Pyramid. It was the lowest part of the bedrock on which the pyramid was built, but it remained unfinished. The so-called Queen’s Chamber and King’s Chamber, containing a granite sarcophagus, are located higher within the pyramidal structure. Some believe that Khufu’s minister, Himeonu also called Himon , is the architect of the Great Pyramid. Various scientific and alternative hypotheses attempt to explain precise construction techniques.
The mortuary complex around the pyramid consists of two criminal temples connected by a bridge one close to the pyramid and the other near the Nile , tombs of the immediate family and the court of Khufu, including three smaller pyramids for the wives of Khufu, even smaller “pyramid of satellites” and five burials .
